What is mad honey?
Mad honey is a rare, raw honey made by bees that forage on rhododendron flowers, mainly in the mountains of Nepal and on Turkey's Black Sea coast. Unlike regular honey, it contains naturally occurring grayanotoxins from rhododendron nectar.
How is mad honey harvested?
In Nepal, honey hunters climb down cliff faces on ropes to reach wild colonies of the Himalayan giant honey bee, once or twice a year. In Turkey, beekeepers place hives near rhododendron thickets during the spring bloom. Every batch we sell is tested by an independent laboratory.
What does mad honey taste like?
Darker and more intense than everyday honey: earthy and slightly bitter, with a warm finish. Colour and texture vary by batch.
How much mad honey should you take?
Up to 5 g a day – less than one level teaspoon. For adults only. Never exceed this amount: eating more can cause dizziness, nausea or more serious symptoms.
Who shouldn't eat mad honey?
